NBC, the National Broadcasting Company, is famous for creating big events like NOAH's ARK, the MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYOFFS or even NEW YEAR'S EVE WITH JAY LENO. But chances are, you've never seen NBC's biggest event, because it's not open to the public.

Each year all the major broadcast and cable television networks put on a show/presentation call an UPFRONT. These star studded shows feature red carpets, celebrities, parties, live entertainment, skits, musical numbers and presentation graphics good enough for primetime TV. The 2000 NBC UPFRONT was held in the Metropolitan Opera House, New York City.

With an assortment of digital disk recorders including a two channel Profile, one Sierra graphics playback drive and an Accom disk recorder, we had more graphics firepower than the average television station. In fact, our graphics unit took up as much space in the mobile truck as the directors and producers.

Each graphics change needed 3-7 cues. We would roll a transition on the screen from one of our DDRs (digital disk recorders) then fade another animation up, cut a key with the switcher, then cue the computer's feed all in a matter of seconds. We had to be in total sync or the audience would see a mistake. Not something you want to happen when the president of NBC Entertainment is on stage live in front of the Network's main source of revenue.
