Adobe Photoshop, Director 5.0

MSNBC's daytime set is a visual masterpiece. The designers were able to combine technology and aesthetics to make one of the most detailed and cutting edge studio sets ever on television.

The studio designers had an idea to make a virtual window to the outside world or a WEATHER WALL. The virtual view is complete with blowing clouds, a sunrise and sunset, and indoor lights. For this project, we created a custom application running off a Macintosh 9500. The VGA signal is then sent through a Folsom scan converter before being projected from behind.

The backdrop changes according to the time of day.

The entire image was mocked up in Adobe Photoshop from reference photographs. Hours were spent adding detail and fixing the perspective on everything from clouds to windows and watertowers.

Partly cloudy on the set of MSNBC.
An unfinished night shot.

The next time you watch MSNBC, we encourage you to take a look at what's behind the news anchor... you might see the Weather Wall.
